about
Blast Beat Drums Solo in a jazzy way.
The concept of this drums solo is double.
First of all, it was to have a blast beat pattern ground, on which I'm throwing different pattern, and then a "reverse blast beat" pattern with hands on down beats instead of up beats, on which I throw also some patterns. This second pattern ended being more like a super long linear fill nonetheless.
Then, I though "what kind of atmosphere do I want ?" Both pattern being intense, I though about an oppressive track, something boiling, and evil, the content of a cauldron, a melted and dangerous substance.
Hence, in order to have this boiling and warm feeling, I've chosen to use a jazzy bass drum, with an open but warm sound. My inspiration here was Christian Vander from Magma. Their performance at Hellfest (2017 I believe ?) was astonishing and maleficent. I wanted that for the solo, and Christian Vander jazzy bass drum sound was perfect. Then, to increase the weird and maleficient spirit, I've chosen to use the "breathing drum technique" on the bass drum. And finally, I've choosen to use a jazz ride, which is also boiling and warm.
Hence, in this video, I'm using my Pearl masterworks 16x16 inches floor toms as a bass drum thanks to Pearl conversion kit.
I'm using a home made stack instead of the left hi-hat, which is basically a 12" T-xtra mini china, then the 14" T-xtra Heavy Hi-hat, and on top, a 10" T-xtra mini china.
Then I'm using my normal set up, 18" Metalshop China, 17" and 19" Metalshop crashes, 10" Metalshop splash, 10" T-xtra mini china, and 20" Metalshop china. Then I'm using a 22" La Pasion Turca ride, and a home made bell on top of my right crashes, which is the bell of a Metalshop Giant Bell Ride, 22" (bell alone is 8" I believe).
